So, you don't want to wear a seat belt.

I couldn't believe the numbers that came out from Saskatoon City Police this week following two days of spot checks focusing on seat belt use. 280 people were ticketed, drivers and passengers, for not wearing their seat belts. Who in their right mind would get in a vehicle these days without doing up their seat belts?? I don't believe for a minute it’s a young person thing, because I know people my age who don't wear their belts either. And don't you love those people who say things like "I don’t want to be trapped in a burning vehicle" or "a seat belt can cut you in half in a high speed crash" Now, much like the motorcycle and bike riders who don't want to wear a helmet, I say, fine, just don’t make me pay your hospital bill. If you are prepared to break the law, put yourself at greater risk of injury, then you should be prepared to foot the bill if your actions lead to short or long term health expenses. As individuals, we may not like some of the rules that come with living in a modern society but if you don't play by those rules then you shouldn't benefit from other aspects of that society, like public funded health care.

seat belts

We lose people every week in this province due to them being ejected during rollovers. Either the impact of the ground kills them, or the vehicle lands on them.

I think for anyone who doesn’t wear a seat belt and have people who care for them, they’re being selfish every time they don’t buckle up. Plus, if you’re the breadwinner in the family, who’s going to look after your kids?

Why end up dead, paralyzed, or brain-dead when it can usually be prevented in most cases.

Most of us grew up in a time where people didn’t wear seat belts. As a kid, I didn’t like to wear a seat belt, but once you wear it all the time it becomes habit and it feels strange if you forget.

I still remember traveling in my friend’s parent van when we used to sit on an actual couch. We’re never in an accident, but if had, the results could have been devastating.

I got caught in a seatbelt

I got caught in a seatbelt blitz in PA a month or so ago, and had my seatbelt under my arm. I still got a ticket... My dad would not leave me alone about the whole thing either. Turns out yesterday, he got caught in a blitz... with NO seatbelt.... the glory is mine!

Too Many Laws

I don't have a problem with an individual law, like seatbelts. However, our Federal, Provincial and Civic governments treat us like a pile of buffoons that can barely breathe without their guidance and regulations. People are becoming tired of havin laws down to the spitting, urinating, and deficating. Police are frustrated because they can not begin to enforce the realm of trivial laws we have, all, of course, to help US.

Not only is it selfish when

Not only is it selfish when one doesn't buckle up, but it also puts the rest of the people in the vehicle at risk as an unbuckled occupant becomes a projectile in a collision.

And no, you can't hold yourself back at nine times your body weight!

Buckle up!

A policeman pulled a friend

A policeman pulled a friend over last night, and I was on the passenger side. On that side, all he has is the bottom part of the seatbelt. The strap that goes across the shoulder seems to be optional, and apparently whoever owned the car before him removed it. I don't care, as I'm a bit on the short side, and they always go across my face. However, the policeman told him that I could be cut in half if we wrecked, and berated him plenty for letting me ride like that. (Kind of irritated me as I'm in my early thirties, and I don't feel I need anyones permission to buckle a certain way.) Anyway, the cutting in half thing, a complete impossibility? I've never seen any news reports about it, so I'm rather questioning it.

Yes in deed a seat belt can cut you in half.

If there is no appropriate shoulder restraint to hold you back, absolutely you can be cut in half by a seat belt. I've seen it! It can take a very long time to die that way in case you're interested.

Some people on here have said it's impossible for a seat belt to cut you in half. Well, if you really can fly forward at 9 times your body weight, of course it's possible for it to cut you like that. A little common sense and physics tells you that.

In the car wreck I'm talking about, two cars rammed straight into each other at 60 MPH. There were two people in the back seat. One had a seat belt with no shoulder strap, and one had no seat belt at all. The guy wearing the seat belt was essentially cut in half. It took about 3 or 4 weeks for him to die. The other guy flew forward and hit the seat in front of him, and was able to get out of the hospital within a few days.

It all depends on how the wreck happens. If the car had flipped, the man in the back with no seat belt might have had much worse injuries, and yes, even died. But how can you compare that with being cut in half like the other guy was, and taking weeks to die? You can't.
