I haven’t had a chance to see it, but there’s a locally grown show that has begun to air nationally. It’s called Rabbit Fall and it stars our own, Andrea Menard.
The synopsis: A professional indiscretion lands Métis cop Tara Wheaton in the remote northern town of Rabbit Fall. She soon discovers the picturesque community is plagued by a chilling history of violent crimes and unexplained events that have some believing a supernatural force is at work. Tara rejects the theory but as the bodies pile up, Rabbit Fall slowly tears away at everything she knows to be true.
This reminds me of The X-Files crossed with In the Heat of the Night, perhaps with a twist of Twin Peaks thrown in for good measure. You know what used to confound me about the television version of In the Heat of the Night? How did they have so many murders in a one horse town without the Feds taking notice? Taking place in an even smaller town, I’m assuming Rabbit Fall deals with that somehow once the bodies start piling up.
I interviewed Ms. Menard when her last album came out, and she is a wonderful and down-to-Earth woman. She also did a great job playing a cop well in the Gemini nominated series Moccasin Flats, the show about the inner city in Regina. It was the first Aboriginal created and produced show in North America.
The interesting thing about Rabbit Fall is that it’s a 30 minute drama, as opposed to the usual one hour format. It’s probably good forward thinking, as it helps to keep an audience interested, and these days attention spans are short. It also makes their production run easier, so they can maximize their resources. I think that if they can fit two storylines into an episode of The Simpsons without skipping a beat, I think they can do it for dramatic television. “This is a show that moves,” says producer Wally Start. “No long music beds while you watch people in lab coats look through microscopes. It’s all drama all the time.” I like that sentiment, assuming they leave a bit of room and spaciness for atmosphere.
Rabbit Fall is produced by Angel Entertainment --- Season two starts on January 28th on the Space Channel as well as on APTN. You can watch it every Wednesday night! Watch the show and go to rabbitfall.com to answer trivia questions --- you could win an iPod touch from Angel Entertainment.

Yes I have! It's very reminiscent of Twin Peaks - it takes me back, does anyone remember watching that show? I can't wait for Rabbit Fall's next season, supposedly it is in the works!

I actually was surprised by how much I like the show! The first time I tuned in I was expecting to make fun of it, but found myself getting drawn in by the drama. The cinematography is really impressive, especially considering I doubt there is an extravagant budget. And while a bit of the acting is a little, well, budget, overall it's fun to watch and usually by the end of the 1/2 hour I still want more.
If you like her singing, I
If you like her singing, I think you'd like her even more as an actress. She has a wonderful presence on screen. You need to check out Rabbit Fall to see what I mean. It's a great show!
bad real estate
how do they explain the fact that people keep dying in a tiny town? are the RCMP/FBI or media involved? i'd move out of a crazy town where everyone was dying.
I actually tuned in tonight
I actually tuned in tonight on the Space Channel and I was pleasantly surprised. I know some people who were involved in some production aspects and I knew that it was local so I wasn't expecting much. Instead, it seemed to really utilize what it had going for it: tight pacing, competent acting, nice visuals and a creepily Twin Peaks style storyline. It's not exactly Lynchian, but I think it shows that the creators of Rabbit Fall are Twin Peaks fans. But if you're a fan of good television, you have to be. I may have to tune into the next episode next week.
OMG !!!!... You killed off
OMG !!!!... You killed off Tara Wheaton ( I think)What are you thinking ?
Bring her back or I'll stop watching... :)
