Name Dropper 101:  I was chatting with Mike Weir the other day and we were talking about Tiger.  I said .... and he said, etc. etc.

Seriously, the pride of Canada on the PGA tour called my studio to chat about his upcoming visit to Saskatchewan next week.  He's doing a big charity day in Saskatoon to help raise money for a Saskatchewan children's hospital.

As reputed, Mike was genial, approachable and warmed up when we started talking golf.  I love talking golf.  Of course, with an 18 handicap moving upward I don't play it very damn well.  But with great passion and enhusiasm.

The obvious question:  Mike, what are some practical tips for recreational average golfers like us?

First, according to Mike, work on the short game.  Rather than hitting drives on the range for 15 minutes before your game, spend time chipping and putting, getting a feel for the greens.  Do this regularly and watch 5 strokes fall off your game.

Second, and this is well known but reinforced by Mike: recreational golfers tend to over-swing and under-club.   He says that some people have to overcome ego and pride (look, you really aren't a 160 yard 9-iron hitter).  And there's fear of being too long.

Mike suggests adding a club or two and remembering that irons are less about distance than they are about control and accuracy.

Gee, that all sounds easy enough.  Now to the golf course!
