When Rogers finally starts offering the iPhone 3G on Friday, July 11, I won't be standing in line to get one.
This morning, the wireless giant unleashed its pricing plans for the iPhone on both its Rogers Wireless and Fido services. To call the plans disappointing would be an understatement.
There is no unlimited data plan offered by Rogers at any price point for the iPhone. The number of outbound text messages included in any plan is so puny that anyone who'd be interested in an iPhone would likely use their allotment in a day. Even the number of voice minutes is disappointing. In short, the Rogers iPhone offering is both an insult to Canadians who've waited for the revolutionary device and a continuation of the seemingly standard corporate philosophy of Canadian mobile carriers to suck as much money as they can from the pockets of consumers while providing as little service as possible.
At the entry level $60/month plan, a customer would get 150 daytime minutes, unlimited evenings and weekends, 75 sent text messages, unlimited incoming text messages, unlimited visual voicemail messages... and... wait for it... 400 megabytes of data. 400 megabytes... that's less than 100 downloaded songs... I can surf that in an hour on the web.
And -- because Rogers bought up its only competitor using the same wireless technology it does a few years ago, you won't find cheaper iPhone plans on Canada's other 3G carrier, Fido. In fact, they're identical to the Rogers plans.
My recommendaton -- as much as it pains me -- is that the iPhone is a do-not-buy. Period. Maybe if Rogers experiences less-than-stellar sales they'll reconsider their greedy, money-grubbing, backwards-thinking ways.
John Himpe is Program Director of News Talk Radio, and will continue to rock his 8GB iPod Touch until Rogers removes their cranium from their rectum.

Can SaskTel's network handle
Can SaskTel's network handle the iPhones? If so, they need to their hands on some. Their plans are usually better than Rogers.
Unfortunately...
Sadly, not.
The iPhone is a GSM phone... Sasktel (and Telus, and Bell) all operate CDMA networks. In short... it's like VHS and Beta.
Rumblings are that Telus is considering switching to a GSM network -- but until that happens, it's Rogers, Fido (also owned by Rogers), or no iPhone. And I'm choosing no iPhone.
By the way, if you're an oil executive from one of the major gas companies... you might want to find a group of geeks today. Even with $1.40/L gas, you're likely to get your first hug in a long long time since and be considered less vile than a Rogers Wireless exec.

No, SaskTel's network is
No, SaskTel's network is CDMA and Rogers/Fido are GSM; however, I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years, SaskTel (Telus, etc ...) are switching away from CDMA.
Switch over to GSM is good for consumers
The cell carriers on CDMA will have another reason to make the switch over to GSM in the next couple of years. Qualcomm the company that makes the chips in CDMA phones is still refusing to budge on pricing. Qualcomm lost a fight with Nokia so now there are no more CDMA phones from Nokia. Now Samsung is now claiming that Qualcomm charges too much. Since much of the phones offered by the CDMA carriers are mostly Samsung products, losing Samsung would put the CDMA carriers in a tough spot. Cell phone subscribers are more likely to bolt from their current CDMA provider if the selection of phones becomes more and more limited. With GSM being an open standard, the selection of phones is a lot better and cheaper. If the cell carriers were on a common standard (just like the days of analog brick phones) consumers would be much better off.
Now that the second
Now that the second generation ipod touch is the same as the iphone except for the phone, I would heartily recommend it. I got mine last week for 279 and love it. Wi Fi on it is awesome as is the safari browser. same screen as the iphone now too. AND NO PLAN! I would recommend a no frills phone and an ipod touch. You won't miss the lame 2Mpixel camera on iphone or the GPS which really is not a full function GPS replacement.
