It seems everyone who should be sharing responsibility for the Regina prison break (and the ensuing inaction to inform the public about it) has their pointer fingers out blaming each other.  It is worse than an episode of the Keystone Cops.

To the Minister of Public Safety : you have failed.  You (and your office) believed it was good enough to follow procedure and protocol, and rely on the RCMP to get the information out in a timely manner.  This is simply not good enough.

To the staff of the Minister of Public Safety : you have failed.  Your inability to feed your minister the correct information during a news conference so as to not have to make follow-up calls to reporters to correct his comments glaringly displays your incompetence in this matter.  This is simply not good enough.

To the RCMP : you have failed.  We're led to believe it took you 12 hours to tell us about the prison break.  12 HOURS.  There is NO excuse for taking so long to inform us that people who SHOULD be behind bars AREN'T.  This is simply not good enough.

To the previous government : you have failed.  We've known for ages that Regina Correctional was simply inadequate.  It took until the very end of your term in power to get a new unit built... too little... too late... as proven by this case.  This is simply not good enough.

To the guards at Regina Correctional : you have failed.  It is your job to keep people who should be in remand in remand.  You did not do your job.  This is simply not good enough.

All the key stakeholders in this disaster of a incident have failed.  They have failed miserably.  And NONE of them are taking responsibility for what has happened... each is pointing fingers at the other, believing the omissions of another are worse than their own.

THIS IS SIMPLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

We - your employers... your taxpaying employers... want more than just answers.  We want action.

HEADS SHOULD ROLL.

What are all of you going to do about it?

Wow I agree

Wow, I thought I would never agree with John on anything, and we find some common ground.

Good work John...

What makes me nuts is Darryl

What makes me nuts is Darryl Hickie--he should be fired immediately. Is he actually that arrogant or just plain stupid to tell us that gangs are not a problem in our prison system? WE ALL KNOW THAT AND WE DON'T MAKE 85 GRAND A YEAR. I guarantee you when those words slipped out of his mouth, everyone in the criminal justice system-the judges, court workers, social workers, police, and the general public-slapped their head and yelled "D'OH!" That he doesn't know--or told the public he didn't know--that gangs are a problem in our prisons should be enough to give hand him his pink slip. And John, don't blame his staff--Hickie should know this stuff or why the hell is he the Corrections Minister?

+1

nicely put Mr.Himpe

I don't think it's fair to

I don't think it's fair to shoulder the blame with Darryl. During the news conference, he said he couldn't say whether or not the escapees were members of gangs. You can't expect a minister to release information he just doesn't have, or worse, guess. That would be irresponsible don't you think? Imaging being Hickie.. and this happens.. and you find out things aren't running properly in one of your jails. What matters for me now, are the lengths they go to to find these men. And how they're treated when they return. (I think the Shawshank Redemption got SOME things right..)
For me, the fault in this matter lies with the prison guards. Their job as guards is to.. I assume.. KEEP the prisoners IN the jail. Like John says, they failed. What exactly are the guards doing all day if they only check on the inmates every four hours as CBC has reported? Obviously more staff is needed.

FAIL??

It is easy to say everyone failed. Remember John when you point a finger, three are pointing back at you.

Maybe you "FAILED"?

If this situation was easy to fix, it would have been fix a long time ago. It is people like you who dwell on the negative and instill the negative in people. This keeps people from working together.

Why don't you spend just as much energy to learn and educate the public on the positive points, the positive programs and the actions the Police, Guards and Government Workers are limited to do by Government Policy and Laws. By doing this, and then, maybe then, people who are not in the middle of the mess will be properly informed on what is happening inside the walls of detention centres, and will then work together towards a solution that will work for ALL the people.

Some times what we do not know, does not hurt us.

"What we do not know, does

"What we do not know, does not hurt us?"

You.  Have.  Got.  To.  Be.  Kidding.

***I*** have not failed.  ***I*** wasn't the one who was supposed to keep people in remand IN remand.  This is NOT instilling negative.  THIS is calling out people who deserve to be called out.

You'd rather bury your head in the sand.  I'd rather be informed.

- John

INFORMED?

If you are informed, then please tell us all you know about the system. Tell us both the good and the bad.

If you do not do this, then you really have failed, or you will prove to the public that you are really not informed.

My head is not in the sand, but maybe your head is up somewhere where the sun does not shine.

P.S. There is No ***I*** in team.

No "I" in Team

To quote one of my hockey teammates:
"There's no "I" in T-E-A-M......but you can get a "ME" outta there.

I agree full-heartedly with Jon here, the Minister should have been fully briefed on the matter, and I suspect there's still some NDP backers in the Corrections system who deliberately withheld this information about what they knew and when.

What I was irritated with was how in Sask, we're so dependent to hear from the Government's Minister in charge (Hickie) and the Opposition critic (Yates) openly criticize eachother over the matter....GIVE ME A BREAK....these two are just jockeying for airtime and politicizing the entire issue.

WE SHOULD DEMAND TO HEAR FROM THE CORRECTIONS OFFICIALS, AND RCMP, AND LAY THE BLAME DIRECTLY ON THEIR PERFORMANCES.

The Underlying issues would also lead us back to the years of decay and crumble of the jail under the NDP reign.

huh?

it is not often i find myself on the same side as mr himpe.the situation is easy to fix, just a lot of cost. your attitude is to sweep it under the rug, while i am not in a group hug mood. guards on duty at that time fired, staff the gives the minister info. fired or disciplined, problay people still left over from clavert era and using this to make political hay. minister should say he is sorry and work to correct the wrongs, oh wait that is happening. the other two will not thanks to a powerful union. time to build a supermax jail and put these thugs where the belong for good.

You don't think its fair, eh

You don't think its fair, eh Anonymous? Let me get you some cookies and milk. You and Hickie should have lunch---but go somewhere in your la-la land and let's get someone INVOLVED in the position of Corrections Minister.

I want you to grab your favorite blanky and think real hard about these facts:

Hickie is the Corrections Minister.
Hickie should AT LEAST know what the general public knows regarding this prison and the gangs that thrive within it.
Hickie should have also known this institution was run down and in dire need of renovations.

Too many politicians simply read/say what they are given/told and don't question their staff on their facts.

Hickie is the minister in charge--he should take the fall.
