A Winnipeg columnist has given the Saskatchewan Roughriders an “F” for their off-season moves. Is this just bitterness from the Grey Cup loss coming from the Manitoba capital or is this an accurate assessment of what was done. Yes, the Riders did lose their head coach and their MVP quarterback ---that can’t be denied nor argued but to say the football team gets an “F” for what it has done between hoisting the Grey Cup and today is a little harsh and a little overblown if you ask me. Eric Tillman wanted to get younger at the quarterback position---he did. He had to cut or move some veterans because of the salary cap---he did. He had to find a way to keep some key free agents—he did. While doing this, he managed to keep together a squad that did not lose its core of veterans ---veterans who I’m guessing must go to camp extremely insulted at all this talk that 2007 was nothing but luck and wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for what Kent Austin brought. If guys like Makowsky, O’Day, Szarka, Davis and Schultz even thought of coming to camp with a different demeanour because they are now champions, I can’t see that happening now. Giving an “F” to Tillman and the Riders should have this football team wanting to put a “U” behind that “F” as they get ready to embark on a very tough path that is called “The Road to Repeat”.
