Perhaps the only thing more gimmicky than fishing is golf. Each year, duffers are lured to drop huge cash on the latest club design or fashionable accoutrement. But the putter in a set of rental clubs on the weekend took things to an entirely new level. Now, I golf fairly consistently. Three years, three golf games (although all three came last year). Some of those courses have included such renowned links as Leisureland at Leroy and St. Brieux’s version of St. Andrews. So, when I got a chance to golf one of the top ten courses in Canada on the weekend while at a conference in Ottawa, it sounded pretty good.  Except the part about getting up really early. And the fact it was raining. "Irish mist!" my old pal (a die hard golfaholic transplant from Saskatchewan) called it.100 dollars for a round is pretty steep but I will concede that Eagle Creek in Ottawa is a little fancier than St. Brieux. The girl in the pro-shop thought we were crazy to try the weather and took pity. She comped me the rental clubs; some very pricey clubs. The driver was roughly the size of a satellite dish while the putter looked like a branding iron.  Or maybe a bicycle pedal. At any rate, it was hands down, the goofiest club ever. Not that it matters. The subtle nuances of space age golf club design are lost on me. You could probably hand me a curved tree branch; it wouldn’t make a lot of difference to my 'game.'  Much the same as the magnifence of Eagle Creek. Frankly, all courses look pretty much the same when I’m thrashing about in the bushes searching for one of those expensive hi-tech golf balls.

If you happen to be in

If you happen to be in Saskatoon sometime with a couple of hours to kill, try the Moon River course, it sounds like it might be more your speed. And, no I don't mean Moon Lake. Moon Lake is an outstanding course that challenges the best golfers I know for about 50 of their hard earned bucks, Moon River is a little par 3 course that some farmer built on a few acres and lets everybody else on for $5 per round (that may have gone up to $7, I haven't dusted my clubs off yet). I've improved my game immensely on it, although where I started from left nothing but room for improvement. The best part is, no bookings needed. Just head out on Valley Road as if to go to the similarly named pro course.
