My two teenage daughters came to the show. Since my son got to see the Stones, I figured they’d get Elton and then we’re square. They were only mildly interested, even though it was costing about five hundred dollars for four tickets.
But by the end of the show, they were on their feet, cheering and totally blown away. And how could they not be? It was a fantastic show, by one of rock’s biggest stars. Hit after hit after hit…the music of my lifetime. Songs that I grew up listening to on transistor radios and car radios and an old clock radio with the numbers that flipped over, down in my basement bedroom, with the mushroom lamp and the blacklight posters.
Anyway.....
The only complaint from the night; the bleacher seats actually were bleacher seats. Made out of wood! Like you’d sit on at a stock car race (if I ever went to one) or a small town sports day. For 115 bucks, I expect a proper seat! And the sound quality was only so-so. But the experience was still fantastic.
Not so fantastic that I would buy a t-shirt. I’ve never bought a concert shirt in my life. Ridiculously overpriced. But, as fathers of daughters know, sometimes when they ask you for something, it’s almost impossible to resist. And so it was that my daughters, now raving Elton John fans, went to school the next day with their new Elton John t-shirts. And Elton just made up all the money I never spent buying albums…and more.
But the memories are worth it.
