I’m not surprised, but I am disgusted. Once again, a trip to the mall finds me shaking my head. A store with a proud Canadian tradition had its Christmas decorations up, in advance of Remembrance Day.

I saw a Christmas tree, but I didn’t see any wreaths with poppies, or for that matter, I didn’t even see poppies on the store’s staff.

Maybe poppies are bad for business? It has the opposite effect one me though. I won’t spend a penny before Remembrance Day in a store that doesn’t have the decency to wait until November 12th to start playing Christmas music.

And on Remembrance Day, I can guarantee you won’t find me shopping. The more than 100 thousand Canadians who died for our freedoms, died for our right to dishonour their memory. But that doesn’t mean we should.

Remembrance Day, in my opinion, is not a day to get an early start on Christmas shopping.

That should be even more apparent this year, as we reflect on the 97 Canadians killed in action in Afghanistan.

As far as I’m concerned, stores should be closed.  But the least a store could do is wait till the 12th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to open for business. It’s called respect.  One caller described a store in Regina as having a sign up that it would open at 11:02.

But let’s be honest. The stores wouldn’t open if there weren’t shoppers. So it’s up to everyone to ask themselves, what’s the best way to observe Remembrance Day? Going shopping? Or to the cenotaph?

Apparently some of my

Apparently some of my friends in Ontario and Quebec(ex-Saskatonians) are confused today. Apparently today is not a holiday there, and they're all at work and at school.
So at least here in Saskatoon we recognize the day.
Another thought.. wouldn't the best way to honour the veterans be to make sure our involvement in wars oversees RIGHT NOW ends? I find it hypocritical for everyone to be honouring those who fought in World War II so no one would have to do it again.. but people are still dying. I'm sure the veterans who died in the war would just love to know we're STILL fighting.
And as far as Christmas music, why not. The two holidays don't have to be mutally exclusive. Just my two cents.

freedom

they fought for freedom. that fight continues to this day. are we the only ones worth the price of freedom? your post i find disgusting and insulting to our troops past and present. just because you have to right to post mindless drival does not mean that you should.

Reality check

You really need a filter between your brain and mouth, or at least a diaper to catch the crap that's coming out of it. You obviously have no clue what the war in Afghanistan is for do you. You are just one of those people who oppose war because it's war. It makes no difference to you if it's right or wrong. You are right on one point, I know veterans from both world wars would hate the fact that we are still fighting the same kinds of tyrants they fought against, but I'm sure they'd be glad we are still fighting for those who can't. I'm betting you are one of those sanctimonious idiots who continually complain we are not helping others enough, but when we do it's still wrong. As for your last point, IT'S NOVEMBER! Why do we need Christmas music already???? You probably aren't even Christian. You just want a holiday from work.

Rembrance Day shopping

Great points, Mur. I remember when everything was closed Nov. 11 - gee, I'm old (47)! Here is a link from a forum I belong to - usually full of people seeking deals on shopping - but the shopping on Remembrance Day sparked some heat and very insightful comments - (Sorry, I don't know how to leave you a hyperlink, but I hope it works if you copy and paste.)

Rembrance Day

It's sad that people are forgetting how important Nov 11 is . To me we must keep on remebering that people lost their lives that we can live in freedom. I feeling the stores and business should be closed as a sign of respect. I have never shopped on Remembrance Day and Never will. What really burns me is these business that out source overseas and those people called on Remembrance Day .

You're right

You're right Natalie. Didn't notice the ad in the newspaper yesterday (shows you how effective those are). Tuesday Nov. 11 ONLY! First 15 people into Sears get coupons!

Lest we forget to get there early for the great bargains. Yuk.

what is find disgusting?

What I find disgusting is people like Murray Wood and Hill3 speaking for our troops and veterans. I would like to think that most of us in the military and our veterans are strong enough not too feel disrespected by petty things like department stores putting christmas trees up in Novemeber. If you really respected us in the canadaian forces you would be saying something positive about us about and not complaining about garbage like this.

sorry

i am positive that i will trust canadian forces to fight for my freedom and believe it is my job as a citizen to make sure that the government of the day gives these brave people the funds to go in harms way as safe as possible.

I didn't actually go

I didn't actually go shopping (put gas in the car though), and I did go out for lunch. All the staff had a poppy on, most of the adult patrons did as well. And a youngish man in a service uniform was also out eating lunch. There was a wreath on display, and poppies were available for purchase.

So, is it okay for a restaurant to be open? but not a store?

Personally, I think it would be more effective if this was a working and school day. Businesses would be expected to hold their own service, or more likely join with other businesses for a joint service, or transport workers to a public one. And schools would hold their service today, not on Friday.

And what is wrong with attending a service, going to a cenotaph, and then going shopping?

If you're conservative and

If you're conservative and rah-rah-rah pro-business, you must understand that making money comes before all else. Christmas is their biggest time of year, where they make over 75% of their profit for the year. So it only makes sense that they'll roll it out earlier and earlier every year. I never pegged you for a long haired liberal hippie, Murray! What would Gormley say??? Hill3 is a genius! Troops fight for your right to shop and you should take advantage of it and support our troops while supporting our big rich companies!
