As I'm sure you've heard by now, the Gormley Show is going to be broadcasting live from CTV's 'Corner Gas' this Thursday, July 10th. I am so ridiculously excited. We're the only media outlet that Corner Gas has agreed to do a project of this type with while they are shooting their final season, we'll have exclusive access to each and every cast member.
A couple of weeks ago NewsTalk Programming Director John Himpe and myself met with the crew. We were given a tour of the stages in Regina - the interior of 'The Ruby', the inside of Oscar & Emma's house and the interior of the police station. There are a couple of giant warehouses (think about half the size of Superstore) and inside these warehouses are bunch of tiny little free-standing rooms - they look like plywood shacks from the outside, to be honest. Then you walk through one of the door frames and you're in 'The Ruby', or the Leroy's living room. You wouldn't believe a) how tiny the sets are and b) how much detail goes into making them look 'real'. For example, I opened Oscar and Emma's fridge, which was full of 'food' - cottage cheese, a bag of potstickers, a tomato and a cereal bowl of cherries. The bowl was the exact same kind of bowl you'd see in your parents fridge - kind of a stone color with a brown stripe around the rim, but the cherries were fake. It was all fake, designed and created by their art department. There was a note on the fridge saying 'Oscar - dinner with Molly 6pm'. Molly is the real name Eric Peterson's daughter.
Inside 'The Ruby' set the bulletin board was covered with notices - auctions; for sale signs - 4x4's, washer/dryer combos, puppies; fowl suppers and community meetings - all with a Dog River twist. The pies and cakes you see in the cases behind Lacey's counter, again, all fake. Apparently they used to use real food in the diner's scenes but got sick of dealing with it going bad.
There's so many other things I could describe but alot of it will come out when we're there on Thursday. John will be set up in 'The Ruby' sitting in one of the booths as he interviews everybody and takes your calls. It's going to be just like you're all there with us, we're going to take tons of video and pictures, and of course you'll be listening to it live as it happens.
I'm in Regina tomorrow working out all the last minute details - I'll keep you posted...in the meantime, I want to hear your Corner Gas memories, we'll try and share as much of them on the show as possible.
Speak soon, t.
Tammy Robert is the Executive Producer of 'The John Gormley Live Show' - listen live every weekday morning from 8.30am - 12.30pm on NewsTalk 650 or NewsTalk 980.
