A quick update on Harold David Smeltzer - the child sex offender who raped little girls - murdering one of them - and is now about to be released on day parole into the community of Regina.

I want to say from the outset that my point is not to promote 'citizen justice'.  I simply feel that Harold Smeltzer does not deserve to enjoy freedom ever again - regardless of how well-behaved he decided to be after he got caught.  (See www.kimmieslaw.com for more information on Smeltzer.)

But it doesn't matter what I want, because he is going to be free very soon.  We need to do everything we can do to protect our children which means being constanly vigilant.  The stakes are too precious to 'hope' that Smeltzer can control himself.  Being informed is key, so here's what I know...

First and most importantly - as of this morning Smeltzer is not yet in Regina.

The Regina Police Service have applied to the Saskatchewan Government's Public Disclosure Committee (PDC) for approval to release Smeltzer's information to the public - a current photo, physical description and the Regina neighbourhood he'll be living in.

The Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing are responsible for this committe.  The PDC is required to meet once a month, but can organize expedited meetings within 2 - 3 days.

The Regina Police Service can disclose the current info on Smeltzer without the PDC's approval - but if they wait for it they cannot be sued if anything 'happens' to Smeltzer.

The Regina Police Service feel that since Smeltzer has not yet arrived in the Regina community, they have the time to go through the PDC process to minimize risk to their organization.  However, if the Committee rejects their application, and they still feel strongly that Smeltzer poses a high risk to the community, the Regina Police can and will release the info.

When will the Regina Police Service have their answer?  Only the Public Disclosure Committee knows - RPS confirmed they do not have a deadline for a response, and the Committee confirmed that they are not going to provide one.

As Gormley pointed out this morning, prisoner transfers of this nature can take anywhere from 1 - 3 weeks.  The Smeltzer decision came down one week ago today, so the clock is ticking.  The responsibility lies with the provincial government - specifically Corrections, Public Safety and Pollicing to make sure this meeting takes place fast (all the contact details you need for that Ministry here -  http://www.gov.sk.ca/ministries-list/ ) and we get the answer our kids deserve.

Smeltzer

As far as I'm concerned, somebody should have lost the key the this piece of trash's cell. When will the justice system EVER start protecting the innocent and get tough on these "repeat" offenders and keep them off the streets PERMANENTLY! Hopefully we can get the hand wringing crowd to understand that these people should not and do not deserve second chances when it comes to dispicable acts especially to children. An act such as this should require a MANDATORY life sentence with no parole, at all.

Thank you

Hello Tammy, I want to take this moment to thank you for your diligence in making sure people are informed. As the Project Manager for Kimmie's Law, I cannot express enough how this exposure has forwarded our cause and member support. We have our petition on line and printable version will be up on the website soon for those willing to go door to door or post it in their office lunch room. We are anxiously awaiting a recent picture of Smeltzer as everyone just wants to see what he looks like now.

We are encouraging everyone to write to their MP's and Mr Harper. If you do this, please print your letters out and send them snail mail as they are more than likely to make it to the desk of the individual. A friend with a sense of humor put an animated video together as a promotion for our cause, changing the criminal code, and it has been placed on the contact page of our website, www.kimmieslaw.com .

In closing, thank you once again and I encourage everyone to take a long look at what is happening around us, there are way too many individuals like Smeltzer just waiting for their moment to apply for parole! Marianne Auger, Project Manager, Kimmie's Law

Recent Photo of Harold Smeltzer

I just got a message on facebook today that a recent photo is up on the Facebook group "DEFEAT Harold David Smeltzer". Here is a link to that group, though you may have to have a facebook account to get to that page.

I know we live within a few blocks of this guy and so we were waiting to see a recent photo as well.

It's time our Provincial,

It's time our Provincial, Federal Governments, RCMP, Community Police Services, as well as every level of the Justice System GET THEIR DAMNED PRIORITIES STRAIGHT!

WHEN THEY DO NOT DO THEIR UTMOST TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT - PARTICULARLY OUR INNOCENT CHILDREN - THEY ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOB WELL ENOUGH - OR SOMETIMES, NOT AT ALL, SO THEREFORE, SHOULD NOT BE EMPLOYED IN ANY ROLE OF JUSTICE!!

With the technology of DNA, along with guilty admissions, the best way to deal with these repeat offenders who can never, ever be rehabilitated is the ELECTRIC CHAIR!

Save the excessive tax dollars of keeping them in prison, going through the rest of the red tape at the time of 'release' for "good behavior" (for how long?) and put them, along with the sick individuals throughout the justice system and the parole board, etc. in the electric chair, or hang them the old fashioned way!

Better yet! Have THEIR "private" parts literally amputated (or Neutered) - that will fix them. Let Lorena Bobbit deal with them!

Well, it's less expensive than the cost of prison, the cost of running the electric chair for each and everyone of these sick members of society - as I'm sure someone will have a concern about the cost of the electricity being used.

Rid our society of these unrehabilitative, inhumane, perverts once and for all! Let our children have their freedom back, to run and play, to ride their bikes, to enjoy the time at the pool or lake, etc., without having to always be afraid of the "Boogey Man" who clearly DOES EXIST and who never seems to have a face - not even a current photo, through to the oldest photo of the face or description - in the media from our justice system or police departments to warn the public - even the children - of what that Boogey Man looks like and IS!

PROTECT AND SERVE? Where is the evidence of that? Certainly not from our police or justice system!!

I am sick and tired of

I am sick and tired of people ripping the police apart, RCMP or municipal, in cases like this. The police did their job, made an arrest in the case, and got the guilty party convicted. The rest is out of their hands. If you understood anything about the judicial process or the court process, you would know this. I could totally understand your comment if no arrest had ever been made. Why do people like you, who don't even understand the process, continue to rip them apart when they have done the job they are paid to do????? I have no idea what kind of job you have, or if you have one, but I dare to say that no one rips you apart or comments negatively when you have done the job you are paid to do, whatever it may be !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Think before you speak !!!!!!!!!

Smeltzer

So, is there any possibility that the half way house Smeltzer is planned to go into anywhere near any of the officials who made this decision. Any bus route going by. We get to 'house' him in our neighborhood, but they think he is safe to wander around. Time for some changes.

Can we protest? How do we start a petition?

I am a very concerned parent, as we live 2 blocks from the halfway house and I have two daughters to consider. My one daughter walks down Sask Drive everyday to get to class.I know I hear all the outrage but I would like to know what I can do at a grass roots level besides phone some MP or other level of bearacracy.I also called Ms.Frances from the Core association after she made her flippant remarks to the Leader Post as to "no one has bringing it to their attention" well I did not know about this Smeltzer's release until the media broke this story so when I did find out I did bring it to her attention, I called left a voice mail and asked for a call back...no word from them so far.. This does not give me any level of comfort, I want to do something but do not know where to start, I want to organize a peaceful protest outside of the Oskana Centre, I want a petition to go around the Core community but I want to make sure what I do is legal(would that not be ironic to be arrested for proesting while a child killer and predator recieves his freedom)If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate that!

Keep Smeltzer in Jail Petition

There is at least two petition sites - please sign!

www.kimmieslaw.com

www.thepetitionsite.com/1/keep-harold-david-smeltzer-in-jail

I would also email the Prime Minister pm@pm.gc.ca and tell him we do not want Smeltzer let out.

Hickie your department is

Hickie your department is under the gun with unfavorable press on other issues-get this one right! You can't control the Parole board's decision. But you can get this meeting done, lets gets through these hoops and release this guys current pics and plaster this city with this dangerous offenders picture.

i believe that the fact that

i believe that the fact that someone can be released back into society after doing something like that is a sad statement of our sociey. stats show that the chances of reoffending are astronomical. why would we even take that chance ? how many people have to get get murder, raped or assaulted before canada takes a good hard look at its justice system inefficiencies?
