The bottom line is that there are more foster kids than foster homes in Saskatchewan, and that needs to be addressed now.
The Saskatchewan Government Employees Union has picked up this issue, issuing a press release last week wailing about the "children at risk" and how SGEU members are so worried "about the long-term impact on the children's health and well-being."
Really.
The foster home shortage is our province is nothing new. In spring of 2005 it was reported that the number of children placed in care had risen 12% over the past year, with 700 more kids in need in Saskatoon alone. So, I'm just going to take a minute and go back through SGEU press releases from that time period, because surely that would have been an issue for employees then...look at that, nothing.
In March of 2006 then Community Resources Minister Buckley Belanger kicked off a foster family recruitment campaign, looking for at least 150 new families to volunteer in Saskatchewan. You'd think SGEU would have chimed in at this point...hmm. Crickets.
No, it was October 17th, 2008 before SGEU issued a statement, and you'll never guess who they declared at fault.
Yesterday SGEU vice-president Barry Nowoselsky spoke publicly on the issue, wringing his hands about the state of things and pointing all ten fingers at Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer's office and how she refused to meet with him - clearly insinuating that she doesn't care. In the same interview, Deb Davies of the Saskatchewan Foster Families Association - which has been jumping up and down about the urgency of this issue for four years - gently interrupts him and says "we are getting results from Minister Harpauer. Her door is always open...she is solution-focused."
Here's the thing - Barry did have a meeting booked yesterday to discuss the foster care issue with the Deputy Minister of Social Services, but Barry phoned and cancelled it right before it was scheduled to begin. Somehow though, the agreed-to meeting didn't come up in his public statements. Further, Barry held a meeting with Harpauer just three months ago, in which he raised several SGEU issues, but not one mention of the foster care situation.
Obviously this "crisis" has popped up overnight.
Oh no wait...the issue "just hasn't happened overnight," said Deb Davies yesterday.
SGEU also promised to call a provincial foster family association yesterday afternoon to set up a meeting to discuss the children (remember them?) - SGEU never called.
Tomorrow morning we're going to address the issue on JGL. I called SGEU to ask a spokesperson to join Gormley, but, alas, they're boycotting Gormley, you see.
I asked Susan Dusel, Communications Officer for SGEU if they couldn't find it within themselves, just this once, to put the "children in crisis" ahead of themselves.
Nope.
Let me spell this out for you. SGEU were not concerned about foster children in the past - when the NDP government was in power, with whom their executive members were in bed with politically. Suddenly they're making hay out of it when the Sask Party government - one they're not too fond of - has the reigns. Bottom line is that when it comes to making political gains, SGEU isn't below dragging out and pretending to care about underprivileged children - but when it stops working with their agenda, they stop caring.
On the show tomorrow we're not going to turn this into the issue, because at the end of the day it's about getting every child in Saskatchewan into a warm bed and a place where they have a chance, every single night. And don't get me wrong, the SGEU plays a pivotal role in this discussion, which is why we asked them to join it. The importance of social workers and those on the front line shouldn't be understated - but it's about always putting the kids first, not politics.

Awesome job Tammy!!! I think
Awesome job Tammy!!!
I think JGL should also do a show on the possiblity that Unions are not needed anymore in this day and age?
Oh yes we couldnt do that because most of them would get fired in the real world as they have no job skills or commitment to the "team" as in the employer
SGEU are greedy
Of course they don't care. As long as the NDP are in power they are all a**kissy, but as soon as their "brothers" aren't in government, they are all pissy. They even tried to twist the Sask Party line about essential service legislation during the university strike during the campaing. I believe, and Tammy, you can check this, the candidate questioned said he didn't feel the legislation wasn't needed at that particular point in time.
Please...
A plee to the public... the actions & opinions of the SGEU do not accurately reflect the opinions & beliefs of their union members.
Unfortunately, it is a condition of employment to be a member of the union...
PLEASE... take a stand with your Union Leaders
I know that one voice in a union membership does little. But many can make great change. It troubles me to see a "plea to the public" indicating the actions of the union do not reflect the members opinions and beliefs. PLEASE, on behalf of Joe Public, all members of a union should take a stand with the union they are a member and ENSURE IT DOES REFLECT YOUR OPINIONS AND BELIEFS.
This issue is about Children that need the help of everyone. If your union doesn't represent your viewpoints well then VOTE THEM OUT! Install leaders in your union that do truly represent you... those that truly care about you, this province, and the children in need. Quit voting in leaders that are politically motivated and think THEY, and only they, know what is best for you.
Stand up Union members! Become a part of the solution... don't sit on your hands and do nothing. For the sake of yourself, this province, and the children. Begin by telling your union leaders EXACTLY what you expect from them on this issue (and any other) and if they do not do as you wish organize yourself and others to remove them quickly.
A union leadership that does not represent the best interests of its members and act in a manner consistent with members values (like on this Foster Child issue) must be held accountable. If it isn't held accountable it will grow stronger in its resolve to make your decisions on issues FOR YOU. Do you really want that? I know you do not.
So... make your union leadership and members aware of your opinions and expectations before they speak for you or shortly after. Don't simply plea to the public for understanding. Take back your union! Make it work for you.

Hoser
So.....you're admitting that your employer has either been "hosing" you, or had you bent over the barrel these last 12 NDP years?
Typical union bs
Great blog Tammy. This is typical of unions in Saskatchewan, they will use anything to push their own agenda. This is despicable. They don't even have the testicular fortitude to go on the air with this position because they know they will be called on it and won't be able to defend it. This is one of the reasons that unions are no longer valid, they have lost the focus of what unions came into being as.
Thanks for the information.
Thanks for the information. It must be a really sad time on the left and in the union brotherhood. Their power in this province has slipped away. It IS about the the hundreds of children that are suffering, and it's only getting worse. I hope you guys bring up the main reason for this crisis-people having kids and not taking care of them. I'll be listening tomorrow.
