Another round of Tammy vs. John on Gormley this morning, and another resounding loss for Tammy.  (Believe it or not, I know losing is my only option when I go into those segments).

We were discussing the merits of the Sexy Nurse, the Sexy Flight Attendant, the Sexy Baby, the Sexy Construction Worker...you get the picture.  Take any word and place 'Sexy' in front of it and voila - the Halloween costume du jour.

To quote Lindsay Lohan's character in the movie 'Mean Girls' - "In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it....just wear lingerie and some form of animals ears."

So okay, let's be clear from the outset.  WEAR WHAT YOU WANT ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT - I have absolutely no interest in stopping you.  This isn't about prohibiting anyone from doing anything, but maybe it's worth taking a moment to think about why this is the new norm.

During the segment, infamous JGL listener/caller Ken probably summed up my counterpoint the best when he called and pontificated on how "women have been fighting" for the right to wear what they want for "years"...wasn't this what "women's lib" was all about?

Yes Ken, that's it.  Women everywhere have been fighting for the right to wear a slutty outfit one night a year.

Yet, Ken's not alone in confusing this kind of sexual power with 'real' power.  Pop culture (ie Britney, Paris, Bratz Dolls, Girlicious) loves to promote this idea that the raunchy, crazy-sexy  woman who just loves taunting and exciting men somehow equals empowerment.  'Girls Gone Wild' anyone?

Yeah, I must be the puritanical prude who doesn't get it.  As some callers suggested, if I don't want to wear zippers, vinyl and fishnets, I guess I don't want to treat myself like a 'Princess for a day', or I must have a self-esteem issue.  (I'm none of these, FYI.  Gormley gleefully pointed out the irony of my black patent leather high-heeled boots - which I love and wear regularly on non-Halloween days, including today.)

This is definitely a tough subject, it's hard to know what to think.  I mean, if dressing in the 'Sexy' category for Halloween is someone's idea of freedom, choice and empowerment, what right does anyone have to argue with that?

Writer Erica Jong sums my thoughts up the best - 'The women who buy the idea that flaunting your breasts in sequins is power - I mean, I'm for all that stuff - but let's not get so into the tits and ass that we don't notice how far we haven't come.'

Hear Hear!hear! (or is it

Hear

Hear!hear! (or is it here!here!?:/) I only caught the final segment of the show (or should I say the 'tail end') but I totally agree with you. I am not surprised to hear that ALL of the men thought it was great, but I was shocked at how many women thought it was. It's a sad state of affairs if being sexy is your only means of empowerment - that just negates EVERYTHING the women's liberation movement has worked toward. I think we've taken one step forward and two steps back. The women who dress like this are the ones with the low self esteem - obviously they need the sexual attention of MEN to feel good about themselves.

Its hot....and only people

Its hot....and only people against it are ugly girls!

Slut-o-ween

As a card carrying third waver I firmly believe in the empowerment of choice. Also a fervent supporter of legalized prostitution I clearly have no issues with expression of sexuality. What gets under my skin with the whole "slut-o-ween" phenomenon is the lack of creativity. One day out of the year to be ANYTHING you want and you choose "girl with low self esteem". Yes that's right, and for Christmas I want to be objectified and degraded, hooray!! If you truly believe that dressing in that manner is a sign of enlightenment and liberation then have the balls to incorporate it in your daily life. If you can only do it once a year because that's the day that others won't mock you for it, then you haven't earned the right, emotionally, spiritually or intellectually. Anyone who buys into the idea that there is power in willingly being ogled whilst strolling about in in a sexy maid costume on Halloween is, in the words of beloved scholar and entrepreneur Mr. Durden, having their fat ass sold back to them.

The same applies to men.

I don't need to see men running around in the male equivalent of slut-o-ween outfits either. I hope to never, ever see any man wearing the Borat swimsuit. Have you seen the giant sign on 8th Street? Ugh. Yuck. Maybe I could destroy it and argue self-defense in preserving my eyesight?

Why does a woman flaunting

Why does a woman flaunting it a bit one night of the year doesn't mean she has low self esteem? Maybe it means they are confident in how they look and want to show off for the one night when it isn't frowned upon. And even if it is an esteem issue, why not allow these girls to feel sexy and good about themselves for one night if this is what it takes to help them feel that way?

I'm not going to pretend to know how a woman's mind works, but isn't the whole women's movement/equal rights thing about having the same freedom of choice/expression as men? Men can wear whatever they want, and women can do the same, regardless of what it is.

Also, I guarantee there will be a few shirtless dudes at the bars tonite.

well, you see, Tammy...Ken is

hardly someone you should listen to. He should be limited to one call a day. Regardless of what he says, he is simply annoying to listen to. His opinions are so far out in right field that he is actually amusing to listen to...as a comedy show.

Dress how you want but...

Dress how you want but... don't be surprised if you get some "unwanted" attention from some unreasonable men.

I think that your technical

I think that your technical supporter Ashley has a few good words to say about this topic...
