If you weren't listening to Gormley this morning at 8.30am, you missed a hell of a good debate.  (Catch it at your convenience by clicking on the onDemand link above.)

Liberal leader Stephane Dion joined the show to go head to head with John over his controversial new "Green Shift" plan to tax carbon emissions.  Dion admitted yesterday to the fact that Alberta and Saskatchewan are the two provinces that would be impacted the most under his plan, given that they account for about 40 percent of Canada's greenhouse-gas emissions.

Oh, and only one Liberal-held riding...but that's just a minor detail.  Totally irrelevant.

On the show he argued passionately that his plan would generate 'Green' jobs in Saskatchewan, with the production of world-leading technology.  But when it came down to justifying the buckets of our cash that would flow directly into Eastern Canada's coffers...well, let's just say I think Dion struggled just a bit (ahem) to answer Gormley's questions.

At the end of the day Dion doesn't want anyone to worry, cause it'll "be good" for us. So don't ask so many questions okay?

I think the best part of the interview was when Dion's voice dropped to a horrified, oh-so-melodramatic whisper after Gormley said the word "screw", repeating Prime Minister Harper's recent statement about he saw the plan impacting the West.

Saskatchewan Energy & Resources Minister Bill Boyd and Federal Tory MP Jason Kenney came up after Dion, and it goes without saying that neither was real supportive.  Then we opened the phones, and it was over two hours of calls from listeners, the majority of whom seemed to have to restrain themselves from using words a little more "vulgar", as Dion put it, than "screw".

As for me, I'm hardpressed to believe that the fact that Dion is taking dollars from provinces where he has virtually no support whatsoever and pouring it into the voter-rich East, is just a coincidence - especially with an election looming in the fall.

What I do know for sure is that it's just started to get interesting (Western separatism anyone?), and I'm looking forward to hearing it play out on JGL.

Election Timing

I suspect, Ms. Robert, that the election will come in the dead of winter, after the public has had a chance to digest the coming hikes in home heating fuel and electrical energy.
When Parliament comes back in mid-September, I believe Mr. Harper will prorogue the House of Commons and bring in a new session in mid-November. Following all the swearing-in ceremonies and a new Speech from the Throne, it will be late November or early December before the opposition could bring down the government. That probably means an election sometime in January, and I'll just bet everyone will be really anxious to elect a government that will add to their energy bills.
Ralph may not be the only one who gets mauled.

I'm moving to Alberta

Thank goodness that Dion isn't in power. Hopefully he never will be. But... if the Lieberals do win an election, I'll be packing up the day after and moving to Alberta. Why? Because I don't want to be left behind with the XXXXXX when the west separates from Canada.

Western separatism, anyone?

No kidding.

I found the JGL audio from another blog I sometimes frequent. Listening to Mr. Dion never does my blood pressure any good.

And then I read this blog for the first time. Very good summary. You should have an RSS feed for it. Or is there and I just can't find it?

green graft

I sincerly wish we had a thousand John Gormleys in Canada. We certainly need a loud voice here on the east coast to counter the lieberal biased news?services we endure. At present all I can do is add JG to my favorites, hey its a start.Thank You

I think that Frank Herbert

I think that Frank Herbert said it best: "The people I distrust most are those who want to improve our lives but have only one course of action."

green shift

I for one will be happy when gas hits 2 bucks a litre as it will under Dion,

Then people will really find out what his bafflegab really means.

"Western separatism anyone?"

A few more years of liberal rule and under their hate the west could manage it.

Has Dion called for stopping immigration to stop our output of CO2 from growing?

Nope

Will he go after the car makers of Ontario?

Nope

People who own private jets?

Nope
