In part I was working on an upcoming project that we're announcing on July 2nd - so excited, can't wait to spill it!
Anyway, I popped by the Legislature to put some faces to the voices of the people in Government Media services that I talk to on a regular basis, but have never met. I've done the school tour-style visit at the Ledge a couple of times, but never been inside any of the 'working' areas. As always, the marble halls were polished to a high gloss, and as intimidating and beautiful as ever.
Then, I entered the first office.
I cannot believe the state of the government offices at the Legislature. The carpets have got to be thirty years old, a retro gold color and are absolutely filthy. They've been recently steam-cleaned, but are black in spots from years of traffic, gray everywhere else. The furniture is a garage sale hodgepodge of ancient flowered couches, tacky mismatched upholstered or reupholstered (twenty years ago) chairs (again, cleaned but covered in stains) and brown fake-wood panelling absolutely everywhere - the walls, the doors, the furniture. Most of the windows are uncovered, as the blinds have fallen down and were never replaced. Some of the original window treatments do exist, but are either broken or in the process of breaking.
I finally had to ask why the place hadn't been updated recently , because honestly, I have never seen corporate, professional offices that rundown and out of date. I didn't really get an answer, but I'm guessing it's because of the potential public backlash to the new government gutting the place (which is exactly what needs to happen).
Right now Saskatchewan is all about pulling up our socks and being proud of our province, as it's finally taking it's rightful place on the global stage as the powerhouse it is and deserves to be. So there's no reason at all that anyone should begrudge the Legislature some new carpets, office furniture and window treatments - at the very least. My vote is for a complete renovation, and the sooner the better. I say call in the decorators for the summer.
