Are You Planning To Make A Donation For The Relief Efforts In Haiti?

Comments

If I thought it was

If I thought it was nessisary I would but that's one of the reasons are taxes are what they are because our Gov't sends money and help to countries that are in need! There are lots of people and communities in our own country that need help also!

And have you been helping

And have you been helping them?

How anyone can look at the

How anyone can look at the news and see those people suffering, and live in this province and not be willing to make even a LITTLE EXTRA sacrifice... Disgusting. Truly. There are no words to express how ashamed this makes me feel.

And the reason that in a country like ours there are people who still need help? Exactly the reason you listed here, "Someone else will help them, I've got my own problems right here."

Disgusting.

This is exactly why i dont

This is exactly why i dont watch the news,,there is never anything new to see,,War, poverty, death, this is no longer news when it happens all the time,,the only thing that changes is the place and date,,it is not new, therefore it is not news.

Mean Spirited person

That is not why our government collects taxes, the taxes are for the operation of our own country and to provide some benevolence to these undeveloped countries. We in Canada and Saskatchewan have a reputation of being good citizens of the world. Your attitude is typical of the old Saskaloser . These people in Haiti live in one of the worst countries in the world and its in the Americas ,our backyard. Canada has a long standing relation with this country and probably should have done even more over the years. This earthhquake ranks as one of the worst in history, its very important for citizens of our country to do everything we can. Donating money is one of the simplest things we can do , to help these incredibly unfortunately people.

I voted no, because I don't

I voted no, because I don't have any money to spare right now. If my cash flow was greater I probably would.

cash flow

Thats a bunch of balogna. Thats just an excuse. I have over $40,000.oo owing on various credit cards yet i still found $100 to donate. Those people are far worse off than we are.

What is WRONG with you

What is WRONG with you people? If you have it to spare, even ten dollars, how can you look at those poor people and not want to make even a SMALL sacrifice for them? Regardless of whether our government and tax dollars is helping them. I'm ashamed of all of us.

if the shose was on the

if the shose was on the other foot would they

That's not the point. At

That's not the point. At all. And if you think it is, I feel very sorry for you. Truly.

I do feel bad for what

I do feel bad for what happened, but tell me honestly, would Haitians do the same for us if we had some kind of freak natural disaster? Probably not. It is great that some people are choosing to help by donating, but when there are so many less fortunate people in our own country, province, and city/town, I just cannot justify sending my money away to help Haiti, or whoever else is so badly in need. It may sound arrogant of me, but I am going to help those close to home first.

Your comment makes me

Your comment makes me literally feel sick to my stomach. There are SO MANY things I'd like to say in reply, but honestly, is there really a point in arguing with a person like you? Probably not.

Haiti Earthquake

I agree with some on here that there are lots of people close to home that need our help. I am not disgusted that people are not donating to help them. Our government is sending money and people to help out. I agree that they probably would not help us out, as they would not have the money too. Likewise, I do not have the money to send as I have my own family to try and feed, so I will not be sending any money to Haiti.

Here's why I won't donate

Here's why I won't donate money

1st: Government collects taxes for aid and well we are taxed enough.

2nd: Haiti is a very violent place here are just a few Headlines as of late.

On October 11, pro-Aristide gunman killed three people in random attacks; there are reports that one parent was killed while walking
his child to school. These attacks recall the worst days of Mr. Aristide’s rule, which was characterized by the criminal use of street gangs to spread
violence and political repression.

The government of Haiti is failing to protect the country's girls against rape and sexual violence, Amnesty International said today, as it launched ...

11 May 2009 ... Roudeline Lamy was 23 when she was shot in the stomach. The impact of the bullet sent the small baby she was holding tumbling to the ground.

8 Mar 2009 ... The Haitian government only made rape a crime in 2005 and takes little action to hunt down sex offenders.

I just see a huge red flag when it comes to giving my money to a community that could easily have that money go to waste. I think when you come on here and shame people for not wanting to give money your a bit out of line. You have know idea of someone's personal views or finances. I know you could argue that giving money to the red cross will make sure that it goes to good use, but in Haiti they are well known for not banding together in a crisis but stealing and killing eachother.

After a hurricane hit Haiti in 2008, rather then working together the poverty strickin were killed or beaten for whatever they had. In my mind even if supplies are given out by the red cross most will be stolen and stock piled by gangs and crooked government. Get some facts before you give your money away and then make a decision. Also get some facts before you shame other people.

So to be upfront and honest I voted NO

WOW!!!

I just have to say wow!! I thought the % saying yes would be way higher. There are people whom need a hand up around here but you don't understand poverty if you are from Saskatchewan or Canada!!! Here, people claim they are poverty stricken if they can't eat out daily or have a nice car. The amount of "impoverished" people here who are obese is insane!! They eat at 7-11 or Mcdonalds, too lazy to buy groceries and cook a meal! You have to travel to these places to see what poverty is.

There are some great comments here, believe in humanity, don't go to Micky dees today, take that 5 or 10$ and send it in, it will help! You have to think that if you have the resources to be typing on your computer, you are not too broke to donate and you are not impoverished globally speaking. I consider myself middle income and donated almost 2% of my income last year, no churches involved.

FYI, the people who are

FYI, the people who are living in poverty and overweight is because the cheapest foods are also the most unhealthy. It's not laziness of cooking a good meal, it's the lack of money. When you need to use all of your pay cheque for rent, it's tough to eat well.

There are many reasons to

There are many reasons to not donate. Before you people jump all over the people who have said no, think. Some people probably have made several donations to other charitable causes. Third world countries are in an almost constant state of crisis. I wouldn't be able to feed my own family if I donated to all these worthy humanitarian causes. While I agree that this event in Haiti is horrific, I cannot justify donating to it. Party for the reasons the other person noted above, and party because I have already donated to other charities this year. For all you people who are bashing the no voters, have you already placed your sizable donation to Haiti, have donated every cause out there. Starvation in Africa, AIDS across the globe. The list goes on. So come on people give your head a shake. At least we are being honest. Just because we said no doesn't mean we're a bunch of money hording, greedy, selfish, cheapskates.

Not donating is not the

Not donating is not the disgusting part. Saying "no" isn't the disgusting part. The reasons some have listed here are the reasons I'm appalled and ashamed of us today... "Someone else (ie. the gov't) is taking care of it, and we have our own problems right here." That is a disgusting way to live a life of privilege like we do here in Saskatchewan. Obviously, we can't solve ALL the world's problems, but this specific disaster is one of the worst in centuries happening in a country already impoverished. And frankly, the vast majority of us have more than enough and we don't help as much as we could and it's shocking that MOST of us can't find even a little to spare for such a desperate situation.

And trust me. I am shaking my head. In total disbelief. I really thought better of this province. SHAME.

(Oh, and by the way? The cause you mentioned? Check, check, check, and then some. So I'll bash as much as I please, thank you.)

"We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."

Disaster Relief

It's not what you'd do with a million
If riches should e'er by your lot.
It's what you are doing at present
With the dollar and a quarter you've got.

I've been following the news

I've been following the news on this, and I see every major news outlet is in Haiti, most with helicopters, reporter, crew etc. What the hell do we need ALL that for.

It seems the only thing they are doing is reporting the news there. I would like to see them sending aid, or sending crews of people to help. Something of better benefit to the victims of this earthquake.

This is exactly why I dont

This is exactly why I dont like this province and the people in it ...I do plan on moving in the future,I would write a book about this place but nobody would believe it...on a lighter note I did find a hand full of good people too bad there were not more of them....

Agree

Couldn't agree with you more. After the recent posts in favour of banning Muslims from flying, more prayer in schools, etc etc I am rapidly considering moving to another province in the next couple of years. Saskatchewan is known for two things: Bible Belt and if you're gonna fit in you better be just like everyone else here or else. This is a narrow-minded, frightened province at best. How many people heard a racist comment in the last 24 hours about Haiti? perhaps a comment on their Godless ways? Well I heard a few and am completely sick and tired of the YEEHA mentality around this place.

Haiti Donations

I chose to donate, even though I can't really afford it, simply because this disaster is so devasting and has affected so many people, and that Haiti is such an impoverished country. For those who choose not to donate, that is o.k. too as that is their choice. There are so many causes one can donate to these days, and you have to pick what your priorities are. I would like to mention that in addition to the horrific human suffering and loss of life, many animals are in need as well. Compassionate humans are the only ones who can help them. I will be donating to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) or the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)in addition to the Salvation Army to ensure injured and homeless animals are helped along with the people in need - both are in desperate need of help right now.

Donating

So... if I donate to this cause, our government will match that donation? Am I not basically donating twice then? That money doesn't grow on a tree behind parliament hill you know. But I still want to help out.....

So now I am a racist

So now I am a racist hillbilly for not donating to Haiti? Now I am a disgusting redneck for having other causes I support (MS, Telemiracle)? Now I am closed minded because I have other thoughts than you?
I wish I was a good a person as all of you so I could look down at everyone.

Huh. Where did someone say

Huh. Where did someone say racist? Or hillbilly? Or redneck? Or even closed-minded? I missed that part. I also missed the part where someone said you are disgusting for supporting other charities. Maybe I was reading other comments? Weird.

My Mistake

Someone DID say racist. I suppose the reason I didn't connect it with your comment was that THEY said they had heard racist comments, and YOU mentioned someone calling you a racist hillbilly for not donating.

Not really the same thing, I'd say, but as someone mentioned above, there's not much point in arguing is there? Some of us will help, and some of us won't. Some of us have good reasons for helping or not helping, and some of us have selfish reasons for helping or not helping. Either way, what a sad sad day for the world... Tragedy strikes and some are moved by compassion and some are not moved at all. And on top of that, all of us snarking at each other on here while thousands and thousands of PEOPLE - some of them innocent little children - lie burried beneath rubble or are left homeless and helpless and hurting.

I wonder how we'd all feel if those PEOPLE were OUR loved ones. Our children orphaned on the streets, our brothers and sisters trapped under buildings, our parents missing, our friends dead... So sad.

I am so tried of hearing

I am so tried of hearing that everytime something like this happens we have to dish out money. when our federal government will dish out millions of our tax dollars to this cause thats enough. knowing that a certian percentage will be lost to the corruption that is obvious in that country i will not give a nickel
sorry for their loss but #hit happens.
have a good one

I hope that when/if %$#!

I hope that when/if %$#! happens (real #$%!, not just a flat tire or whatever else usually constitutes $%^# in our priviledged lives) to you someday, people are kinder and more compassionate to you. This year my family desperately needed the help of a charitable organization, and if people had thought the way you're thinking now... I don't know what we would have done. There's always an excuse for not giving, it's sad when those reasons outweigh mercy and compassion.

Donation to Haiti

Wow! I can't believe the negativity! These people did not choose to be born where they are. This is an incredible disaster, how could you turn your backs? Hope it's not you some day....
