The military says a Saskatchewan-based soldier found dead Friday morning in the Middle East is originally from Montreal.

Corporal Brendan Anthony Downey served with the Dundurn-based Military Police unit. He was found dead in quarters, at the Theatre Support Element compound in the Gulf region. The base provides support to the Afghan mission.

Enemy action has been ruled out in Downey's death.
