December 8th Deadline For Ottawa

Prime Minister claims election is only choice, not coalition
Story Tools

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has delayed for a week a confidence motion vote that could bring down his government.

The earliest the vote could now come is December 8th.

The opposition parties vowed to defeat the government as early as this Monday because the Conservative fiscal update did not contain any measures to deal with the economic crisis.

The Liberals, New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois have been in talks aimed at forming a coalition government with Stephane Dion as its head.

But Harper says Dion does not have the right to take power without an election.

It is because of the economic statement released by the Government Thursday which the Opposition parties contains no economic stimulus, the Conservatives are urging patience to see if things rebound.

Harper also cancelled the vote on political party funding, which also gave an opening to bring down the government.

We don't need another vote

We don't need another vote to get rid of these scheming, power-hungry, duplicitous extremists.

We have a parliamentary mechanism for just such occasions -- coalition government.

This is not democracy

We did not vote for a coalition, or Dion as PM, what Dion and Layton are proposing is a bloodless coup, we have to have another election, that is the only way if the government is defeated

This isn't a coup, a coup is

This isn't a coup, a coup is a "sudden unconstitutional overthrow of a government".

A coalition government is entirely constitutional, and this is how our system works, for better or worse!

Unlike the scheming power

Unlike the scheming power hungry extremists on the other side?... Don't trust any of them. Period.

Coalition? I think not

During the election campaign, Stephane Dion said there would be no way he would consider a coalition with the NDP...Jack Layton is pushing for it because that's the only way he'll get his hands on the reins of power....Scary thought, Finance Minister Bob Rae? They keep harping on a stimulus package, but they have no plan of their own..

Elections

I am sick of elections!!!!! Enough already!

Get Rid of HARPER

It's about time we get rid of Harper and his band of idiots. The only thing they know how to do is SCREW the people, and their is lots evidence. If we have a coalition government, I believe we would be better served and governed. At the same time we could save ourselves about $400 million on another election, as the last election cost us $350 million.

Evidence?

Sorry... saying there's lots of evidence isn't good enough. If you are going to make bold statements like that, you better have some facts to back that up with. I can say I'm a millionaire, but until I can prove it with my bankbook it's still a load of crap. Better luck next time.

Coalition is the only way

Coalition governments can work because people are forced to work together; unlike the Conservatives who do not show leadership in government by antagonizing not only political parties, but working people and unions. As the supreme court ruled, collective bargaining is a human right. The Conservative government, like the Sask. Party, only antagonize not democratize. Mr. Harper is wrong to suggest that a coalition government could not work. He knew more about what was wrong with the economy at election time, and did not share it..Mr. Harper, you mislead the Canadian people. If the people knew the facts, the outcome of the election may have been different.

It Absolutely WILL NOT Work

The Coalition government absolutely will not work because each of the 3 "coalition" parties have nothing but their own self-serving interests at heart. All it takes is 1 of the 3 to disagree on one issue & that's it. Do you really thin the Bloc, NDP, & Liberals are gonna be able to go 4 years like that? Things must be fun in your dream world. We will have an election before March if this all happens. Period & full stop.
