Story Tools

"Not Guilty"That's the verdict from a judge in Saskatoon in the second trial of David Ahenakew on chages he incited hatred against Jews. The allegations stem from a speech and interview Ahenakew gave in 2002, when he said Jews caused the second World War, and he compared Jews to a disease. At his first trial, the former head of the Assembly of First Nations was convicted, but it was overturned, and a new trail ordered.

What a joke!!!!

What a joke!!!!

what a lot of you know what!

what a lot of you know what! just goes to show that if your are native you can get away with just about anything. what a can of worms that has been opened now! now he realy will be playing the victim, and will be awarded how much monies for whatever law suit he comes with now. I am sick as hell with our judicial system. Racism is is an issue that natives have been dealing with for some time and now its the other way around and look what happens. racism in Sask is going to get worse and worse, I fear for the future of this province.

Found Not Guilty

What an incompetent carriage of justice, I wonder if the same verdict would have been made if the shoe was on the other foot, and the First Nations were blamed for some of their horrendous misfortunes?????

Proving once again its

Proving once again its perfectly acceptable to be racist as long as your skin isn't white. Until aboriginals realize that it doesn't work unless it works both ways, there is no absolutely chance to fix the problems. This is a giant stumble backwards.

oh brother

I guess that means we should all be able to walk around saying other people are diseases and get away with it? Talk about reverse racism.

good

good, even though i disagree with his views and find them repugnant(sic), he still has the right to hold those views.

Free speech

Just a few decades ago we used to have real free speech in Canada. You could say anything you wanted about anybody or any group, especially if you believed you had the factual evidence to back up your beliefs. Free speech was murdered in the 60s and 70s by those we today call 'socialists'. They programmed the masses and passed 'laws' to make certain subjects taboo and outright criminal to discuss in public, even if you have solid evidence for your convictions. This victory for free speech is just a small step toward real free speech revival. The laws that forbid real free speech were not overturned yet. Canada in fact does not have a constitutionally protected free speech. People like to think that we do but the truth is that there are over 50 court and so-called 'human rights' cases which prove that we don't.

It's important to note that what Mr. Ahenakew said back then to the reporter that sparked the whole 'hate trial' was based on his life experiences. Mr. Ahenakew was overseas during World War II and had direct (uncensored by today's controlled mass media) contact with the Germans, the Germans that our forces supposedly fought to preserve peace and freedom in the world. What kind of freedom did the allied forces bring to Germany? If you only question the 6 million (even if it's only by one) in Germany you face some serious jail time.

He spoke his true feelings.

He spoke his true feelings. He just got caught, that's all. For someone who claims racism towards First Nations people like himself, how can you stand in judgement and hatred of another person for who they are? You make me sick Ahenakew. One day God will judge you. (comment removed) You are (comment removed) who hates others for being who they are (Jewish), just as you claim you are hated for who you are (First Nations). You most certainly are not the bigger person or the better person. Racist people like yourself do such damage in our society. Your views are ignorant and hurtful.

It matters not....

It does not matter guilty or innocent ion a court of law, everybody knows the character of David Ahenakew now.

So, if it were me who said

So, if it were me who said those things about our First Nations people, would I have been acquitted? Look at the grief Ezra Levant went through just for publishing cartoons in the spirit of free speech. What a mixed up Canada we've become.

I am in no way condoning his

I am in no way condoning his words, but come one!! I hear and see racism against Natives all the time! No one gets charged for hate crimes for that. Look at PANKIW! (comment removed by moderator) The only difference with him is that he knew how to get his hateful views across in a sneakier way than Ahenakew. There are so many HATEFUL things that have happened to First Nations by the government, churches etc. Did any of them get charged? They wanted to rid this country of Natives but did anyone get charged? No!! Then one Native man makes a comment about Jews and everyone is up in arms and automatically it's "us against them". Why don't you people step off your high horses; you're all so predictable with your comments. You are just outraged that it is a Native that said it. If it was someone white that said the same thing it wouldn't have even been an issue.

Didn't your mother ever

Didn't your mother ever teach you that two wrongs don't make a right? There is one simple rule in life that so many people sadly do not learn. It is simply this, if you are going to accuse other people of the wrong they do (i.e. accuse white people of hating you as an aboriginal) you better make friggin' sure that you are not guilty of the same action in your life. (i.e. an aboriginal man hating jews).

This verdict is a travesty

This verdict is a travesty of justice.I hope that next time the judge is at the other end of one of this man's rants. Maybe then the full and true effect of this action will be felt by the judge. The two of them have, once again proved if you can't blame a Jew for your problems then they doesn't exist. Since this man is not then, how could he do wrong? Right?

until the race baiters stop

until the race baiters stop tossing the word 'racist' around every time someone mentions natives, we are doomed for much more of the same. no one will be able to have a constructive discussion, and none of the glaring issues will be addressed. the word racist has been the discussion stopper for yrs. it has been used out of fear and lack of intelligent rebuttal and it is getting old. political correctness has gone whacko and every fair minded reasonable Canadian, on both sides of the argument, is paying for it. face it, the truth is if a white guy in a position of authority, and to the media no less, used the same remarks about the first nations, well i'm guessing there would be a little more than a slap and a lecture. also the irony of the remarks is astonishing really, coming from a guy who has been claiming the same oppression he appears to support. just unreal. i am sure there are quite a few native people cringing at the comments as well. he has set back his cause for sure.

OK so let me get this

OK so let me get this straight. If I was a first nations or aboriginal I say say what I want about who ever I want and not be called a racist. Nor convicted of a hate crime. Seeing that I am a Caucasian if I did the same I would be labeled the biggest racist ever and have my feet held to the fire by the FSIN and their Chief who leads a organization that never accepts responsibility for the actions of themselves or their people. I could get drunk and take my children outside and let them freeze and get a circle where a Caucasian would immediately be taken to jail for more than 2 years. I can get drunk and drive a vehicle and KILL 6 people outside of Cochin, Sk and get less than 10 years. Humm to me is there a double standard going on with our justice system. I'm so sick of everything being slanted in first nations and aboriginals favour and being told that I can not get this job or that job because I'm a white male who pays taxes. Time and time again I see my hard earned money going to the various levels of Government that set up programs and have jobs that I can not get. I'm like most people in this province sick of the systematic racism against me that is to afraid to say anything. Well right now I'm saying something. IM SICK OF IT. WE ALL WANT TO BE TREATED THE SAME. THAT MEANS IN JUSTICE, PROGRAMS, AND EMPLOYMENT.

Let's Compare

Alright, let's take this concept into a different cultural context... when Mel Gibson released "The Passion" he had to change parts of the movie because they were anti-Semitic. He also got trashed on, maybe not legally but certainly in the court of public opinion, for comments he made about Jews when he was drunk. Ahenakew was neither drunk nor did he have his opinion of Jews subtly implied through a scene in a movie. It was blatantly, ignorant, & certainly hateful. If, for argument's sake, Mel Gibson had said the things that Ahenakew does anyone really think that Mel wouldn't have had hell to pay? So, can we reasonably conclude from this ruling that it's okay for minorities to hate minorities?... Just the majority can't join in on the "fun" I guess. What an embarrassment to all decent hard working aboriginal people everywhere & to our justice system. No one of Ahenakew's former standing should be able to refer to an entire race of people as a disease & not have to answer for it. I have no doubt that Ahenakew would be on the war path if someone were to make such outrageous comments about Aboriginal Canadians. It is simply not right.

Don't run for office

Comment to "OK lets get this straight".

Please don't run for public office under for the cause of "all should be treated the same". You will be called a racist and be brought in front of a self righteous "human rights tribunal".

OK SO LET ME GET

OK SO LET ME GET THIS!!!!!!

Your rant is almost as bad as his.

I dont understand how 980 is

I dont understand how 980 is not charged for promoting hatred for allowing all of this crap on here.

Prob. wont post this because it would get some people thinking.

so now we wait for him to

so now we wait for him to sew the taxpayers

great news

good job Doug Christie.

Intersting to observe to observe the hypocrisy in the comments....contributers here call Ahenakew a "racist" while they display their own bigotry against Indians.

but thats the Matrix we live in....you people are kooks

omg...This guy came to the

omg...This guy came to the restaurant I work at today and I was his waiter...I didn't know he was until a friend of me at work told me that it was David Ahenakew, and I'm like no WAYYYYYYYyy.........oh well that's because I'm not so much into politics or anything and I barely watch the news...the good thing is he left me $11 tip lol

disgusted at this poor

disgusted at this poor excuse for a judical system ,we might as well have a bunch of juvinile deliquents running it. it seems they can't look into the future at all and see what a split they are making.

The Big Picture

I hate what this man has done, and its dispicable that he walked away free with little consequence. I am lucky enough to have some great friends, and some of them are first nations. What David Ahenakew has done is horrible for the common perspective on our native population.

-
This man is a racist and deserves severe punishment not only for what he's said but, for the trickle down of this rift he has caused.
