FSIN Takes Step Toward Gaming Control
The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is taking steps to control gaming on reserves.
The FSIN has formed a commission to oversee First Nation gaming. Chief Lawrence Joseph says it's in an effort to retain more of the gambling profits.
"The province gets 25 per cent of all of our profits and certainly that's something that's been an irritant in First Nations since its inception," he says. "I think if there's a will [for the province] to talk about these things, absolutely, we'll put everything on the table."
There are six casinos on First Nations land. Joseph says the FSIN is ready to run the show.
"We are indeed prepared to work with the province, but if we have to, we are prepared to do it without them."
The FSIN would like the province to join it in lobbying Ottawa to recognize First Nation jurisdiction over gaming.
Joseph says First Nations communities are suffering from poverty, poor health and insufficient education. He argues full control over gaming would bring in more money to address those issues.

Enough said.
Red Flags everywhere
You got that right.... Do some searching on the Dutch Lerat case involving mismanagement of monies and you'll have doubts. Also, how about learn how to get the First Nations University acredited again before worrying about this ? First fully run aboriginal university in Canada and they have been cited for mismanagement of it (ie interference from Chiefs of FSIN and not being autonomous). Now they would prefer to fully run the casinos with whatever rules they decide ?? Please.
FSIN & Casinos
Are you kidding!!!!!!
This is NOT FAIR!!!
I was in the Rural Hotel business in our province for many years and got out of it in 2002. The rules for Innkeepers of this province are FAR Different than for FN run Casinos. The Hoteliers of this province and all VLT locations in lounges etc pay 85% of all profits to the Government, not a measly 25%. All races and cultures of people frequent these establishments, so It is only natural that all people should reep the benefits of VLT profits through our hospitals, roads, social programs etc..
So the casinos will be run
So the casinos will be run more like the FNUC ?
You've GOT to be kidding me.
If they can't make things better with 75% of the profits... what makes em think 100% will cure all ills.
Until their is accountability...REAL accountability with the FSIN leadership... NO WAY. The chiefs, their close family and friends will be better off... but no one else.
Yeah....no.
Sadly, I don't think the FSIN is ready to be in control of gaming. I have several friends who work in the industry and they are shocked at the waste of money. I also strongly disagree with Joseph---there is money now for First Nations but it is being spent elsewhere on people who don't need it.
I have always thought Joseph is anything but the best advocate for First Nations and they deserve better.
I think at best, the FSIN could be given the helm for a year and if things go well, two more years after that and then they can take control.
In the meantime, I would like any information on how much money has been given to the poor people on the reserves, and the salaries of Joseph and others at the FSIN, as well as how much they are allowed to spend on travel, entertainment, etc.
I think most First Nations people deserve to know.
FSIN Takes Step Toward Gaming Control
If they take all of the profits then we should be able to reduce the money they get from the province by the amount equal to the amount that would equal 25%.
FSIN Takes Step Toward Gaming Control
unfortunately the money does not come from the province, it's federal. the advice is still sound, just need to get the facts correct. (in know that there is money that comes from the province, such as health, but the feds repay it so it's still federally controlled.)
Bad idea!!
They currently pay no taxes to the cities, the improvements to the roads around the casino in Prince Albert cost thousands to the tax payers!! 0$$$$ to the casino! The road to the Dakota Dunes was paved and rebuilt at a cost of millions$$ to the province, 0$$$ to the casino, I'm not sure where they think all the infrastructure comes from but the taxpayers sure do!! The last thing they need is to control more money to spend as they please, might as well just burn it!!
LJ
(comment removed by moderator). Where was he last week when doctors were saying his people were dying of HIV? Where was he when people were demonstrating over lost native women? What is he doing about native addictions and suffering, filling his face and having a good time. L.J. has proven over and over he does not care in the least about his people. Hes in it for his own benifit. As soon as his people need something he says "Ask the government, Im going to an all expense paid meeting with a select few." He is a disgrace to his own people.
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
Please don't allow this. I am native and I see on a daily basis how corrupt the indian governments are (Comment removed by moderator). The money gets only to about 10% of the people, which equals the amount of people that are friends and families of the Chief and Council. Did Dutch Larat ever have to pay the money back? NO... the same thing is going to happen, and there are no checks and balances in place to make sure these evil men have to pay any misdoings back in full and spend time in jail, but this never happens. I have seen many years of mis-management on one reserve, heard about it on others. It doesn't go away, take the money away from these men, make sure the money gets to where it's needed. WAKE UP Premier Brad Wall.
I hope that the Federal or
I hope that the Federal or Provincial Governments are not stupid enough to allow this. I think that everybody should gain from the gaming just not the FSIN, who, seem to have a gaming monopoly in this province. I'm sick of their greed and mismanagement of the resources they have already. They want to go it alone eh? Why can't they play ball like the rest of Canada? And stop fighting the people who give them everything they have.
