GREY CUP 2009: Riders vs Alouettes
The final hours and minutes are ticking towards kick off of the 97th edition of the Grey Cup. The Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Montreal Alouettes put the finishing touches on their game plan ahead of Sunday's kick off from McMahon Stadium. (5:30 on TSN)
The Alouettes have been practicing with noise all week, knowing McMahon Stadium in Calgary will sound similar to the Riders regular home, Mosaic Stadium. And the Alouettes may face the largest Rider home crowd this season as most of the 46,020 are likely going to be on the side of the West Division Champions. That's over 15 thousand more than what Mosaic Stadium can hold.
Heading in, the 10-7-1 Riders are the underdog by nine-points to the 15-3 Alouettes but Rider quarterback Darian Durant says the Als deserve to be the favourite. What Durant won't say is he is nervous before the biggest game of the year, "Everyone is trying to make the game bigger than it is. It's a game, for three hours it's a game, a game we've played our whole life. At the end of the day we may get a trophy for it, the stakes are bigger but in order to get to that point you have to play the game."
On the flip side you have Alouettes' quarterback Anthony Calvillo motivated to end an 0-4 record in the Alouettes last four trips to the Grey Cup, "For us, we're sick and tired of losing and we all sense that and we have an excellent team record and we're going to go out there and compete."
The Alouettes defeated the Roughriders both times the teams face in Sunday's CFL finale but they haven't played since August. The Alouettes lead in the Riders in almost every statistic in the Canadian Football League but Head Coach Ken Miller gave the media a taste of what his pre-game speech may sound like before his team heads out of the locker room doors for the team introductions, "This is one game for all the marbles. History doesn't matter, stats don't matter, when we tee-it up and kick it off tomorrow afternoon it's a football game between two really good teams and we're going to give them everything they want and more."
