Riders Hold Two Touchdown Lead At Halftime
Some Rider fans are holding their breath, others are jubilant.
Three Luca Congi field goals and an Andy Fantuz touchdown reception have the Saskatchewan Roughriders leading the Montreal Alouettes 17-3 at halftime of the 97th Grey Cup in Calgary.
The Riders opened the scoring halfway through the first quarter with a 40-yard Congi field goal just four minutes after the kicker missed from 47 yards out.
Saskatchewan struck for a major after Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo fumbled deep in his own end. Darian Durant hit Fantuz from eight yards out to put the Riders up 10-0.
Montreal didn't cross into Saskatchewan's half of the field until the final minute of the first quarter. However, the Als were stymied in the red zone, settling for a 28-yard Damon Duval field goal.
The Alouettes threatened again midway through the second quarter until receiver Kerry Carter fumbled the ball along the sideline. Chris McKenzie scooped up the loose ball just before it could bounce out of bounds.
The Riders tacked on seven more points in the last two minutes, with Congi hitting field goals from 44 and nine yards and Louie Sakoda blasting a kickoff into the Montreal endzone for a single.
Saskatchewan has outgained Montreal 230 total yards to 147. The Riders have doubled the Als in the running game and are winning the turnover battle, forcing two Montreal giveaways.
The Als will kick off to start the third quarter.
