Mendel Art Gallery On The Move
The Mendel is on the move.
Saskatoon City Council has approved the framework for the destination centre at River Landing. It includes plans to house the art gallery. Some argue there hasn't been enough public discussion about the move.
But Art Knight speaks for the Mendel Art Gallery, and says there were time contraints that forced them to make the decision to make use of the federal money. The Federal and Provincial Government have collectively chipped in about $50 million dollars for the project. The city still needs to raise another eight million.
Councillor Pat Lorje opposes the move. She feels the Mendel should stay where it is until a market analysis can be done. She worries the Saskatoon taxpayer will be left to foot the bill.
The gallery will also include an expanded Persephone Theatre.

Saskatoon needs to have the
Saskatoon needs to have the vision to make bold moves such as this without paying any attention to the "let's study this to death" crowd. If we listened to this sad group of NIMBY's or change is too scary we'd never accomplish anything. It's nice to see the majority of city council has the guts and determination to make progressive decisions.
