As Olympic lessons work their way into classrooms around the globe - one local school is getting a truly intimate experience. Wilfred Walker French Immersion paired with Reginan speed skater Lucas Makowsky this fall, through the ‘Adopt an Athlete Program’. The school raised 2-thousand dollars for Makowsky and in return the Olympian has been conversing with students through a blog and Skype and even sends the occasional postcard.

Grade seven student Kyle Moore is a speed skater himself, he calls Makowsky a personal hero.

“He said he fell in a race once and he just got back up and never gave up… I had a race once and I fell and I got back up and was able to finish it.”

Another student Anantjot Mandahei says getting to know an athlete has changed her Olympic experience.

“You look forward to seeing him and your all pumped up to cheer him on, even on your TV screen."

Makowsky came in 19th during Saturday's 1, 500 metre event. He skates again Friday during the team pursuit.
