Lucas Makowsky Returns Home
It was a warm welcome home for Lucas Makowsky.
The Regina resident and Olympic speed skating gold medalist was at Wilfrid Walker school in Regina to say thank you for all the support the school showed him during the Olympics.
Makowsky was adopted by the school as part of the Adopt-an-Athlete program. Students and staff kept in touch with Makowsky during his stay in Vancouver through mail, e-mail and video messages.
One video message in particular helped him get over his disappointing 19th place finish in the 1500m.
"To get that video right afterwards.....I couldn't help but smile. That was probably the biggest surprise for me."
He says the video helped motivate him and focus on the team pursuit which of course won gold.
The school was also able to raise $1,825 dollars to help offset Makowsky's training costs.
The Makowsky award has also been created to honour Lucas. Every year, a gold medal will be presented to a student from grade 3 and up who demonstrates selflessness, compassion, personal best and who adheres to the shared values of the school.
