Brandon West returns to the Roughriders line up
A familiar face is coming back into the Saskatchewan Roughriders line up.
Running back Brandon West hasn't been seen in a game since he fumbled early in the pre-season game against the Calgary Stampeders at Mosiac Stadium. On Friday, the depth chart for Saturday's match up, also against the Stamps, was released and West is listed at slotback. He will be in the line up.
"I wasn't happy, but things happen," said West. "I think things happen for a reason."
It will be a change of pace for West, who played mostly running back in the CFL, as the slotback role will force him not only to run the ball, but to catch the ball too.
"Let's revert back to me coming out of college," said West. "I was running back/receiver."
So obviously West is pretty comfortable with it. During those same college years he set an all purpose yards record at Western Michigan. West adds that he's also comfortable playing slot because it gives him a lot more open space.
"I was just talking to one of the coaches, I love space," said West. "Give me the ball, let me do something, let me get on my horse."
For his part, Head Coach Corey Chamblin admitted that the fumble did play a big part in West losing his job, along with the play of Kory Sheets, but he gives West credit for never giving up.
"In house competition is the best," said Chamblin. "He's been fiery ever since, he's given 100 plus per cent, and every day either he's beating the DB's or the linebackers or somebody."
Even though West is coming in the line up, Chamblin said that Sanders could have played, but they did want to bring in the healthier bodies. It all goes back to Chamblin's philosophy of using everyone on the roster.
OL Ben Heenan and Patrick Neufeld have officially been removed from the roster of Saturday's game.
Look for newly signed receiver Aaron Hargreaves to make his Rider debut as well.
The team also brought in motivational speaker Alvin Law to speak to the team after walk through. It wasn't football specific, but they did talk about overcoming adversity.
